Day 2

Crow River, Crow Bay, Lake Lavieille

First night sleep wasn't bad, Ted didn't sleep to well but the rest of us did.  We were up at 6:57 and started to take down camp while getting breakfast ready.  Quaker Oatmeal, bacon and coffee with Baileys is always a great way to start the day.  We really weren't sure how long today would be; river travel sometimes can be deceiving as you never know how many beaver dams you'll encounter.  We hit our first portage at 9:10, 240P and the first of seven though they were all really short.  Today was "moose day" as we encountered four different moose sittings; all on Crow River.

Ted, Bert and one of the moose

At 12:00 we stopped for lunch at the 170P on Crow River, summer sausage, pita, cheese and an orange.

When we got to Crow Bay the wind had really picked up and it had already been a  long tough day of paddling Crow River to Lavieille.  By the time we got to Lavieille we decided against heading out to the island site we had originally targeted and looked for the first decent site.  At 3:20 we stopped at one of the group of 4 sites just as Crow Bay and Lavieille meet.  The site was nice enough to stay so we setup camp and we were all pretty tired from the rough paddle we just had.

Perfect spot to relax

While we were sitting on this nice rock, Joe, Lorne and Marie came by again and stopped for a quick chat.  The told us how when on Club Lake the wind actually shifted and was behind them.  Using their sailing experience they took one of the tent fly's, attached them to a couple of paddles and used it as a sail.  They cut right through Club Lake with ease; something we will be sure to give a try one day!!!

As always we attempted some evening fishing; Ted was out for about three hours and caught one small walleye.  Moe and I ventured out for about an hour and never had a bite.  The highlight of the evening was a loon that I think was doing some kind of matting ritual though I'm not certain.  He would almost kind of run on the water smacking his wings.

Bert isn't into fishing and spent the afternoon and evening sitting on the big rock reading a book.  Around 9:30 we got another fire going and again played our guitars.
